农历七月初七是中国民间的乞巧节，传说这一天是天上牵牛星与织女星相会的日子，而这其中有着一个关于牛郎织女的美丽动人、流传千古的爱情故事。 相传很早以前，南阳城西牛家庄里有个聪明、忠厚的小伙子叫做牛郎，父母早亡，只好跟着哥哥嫂子度日。嫂子为人狠毒，经常虐待他，逼他干很多的活，最后还把他赶出家门。孤苦伶仃的牛郎只有一头老牛相依为伴。突然有一天，老牛告诉牛郎：”明天是七月初七，天帝的七个女儿要下凡到人间洗澡。其中最小的女儿织女最心灵手巧，你把织女的衣服藏起来，她就可以做你的妻子了。”听了老牛的话，牛郎心动了，决定试一试。 七月初七这一天，牛郎藏在河边的芦苇丛里等候。没多久，只见从天上翩翩飘落七个仙女，纷纷脱下衣裳，跳进清清的河水中。牛郎一跃而起，抱起织女的衣服就往回跑，惊动了七位仙女。六位仙女披起各自的衣服，飞上天空，惟有最小的织女没有衣服而无法升天，惊慌失措地站在河边。牛郎结结巴巴地对织女说，只要她答应嫁给他，就把衣服奉还。织女一看是自己爱慕的小伙子，就含羞点点头。婚后牛郎织女男耕女织，相亲相爱，生下一对儿女，生活得十分幸福美满。王母娘娘得知后勃然大怒，亲自下凡来，强行把织女带回天上。 牛郎穿上牛皮做的鞋，拉着自己的儿女，一起腾云驾雾上天去追织女。眼见就要追到了，岂知王母娘娘拔下头上的金簪一挥，一道波涛汹涌的天河就出现了，牛郎和织女被隔在两岸，只能相对流泪。他们的忠贞爱情感动了喜鹊，千万只喜鹊飞来，搭成鹊桥，让牛郎织女走上桥相会，王母娘娘对此也无可奈何，只好允许两人在每年七月七日于鹊桥相会。 后来，每到农历七月初七，相传牛郎织女鹊桥相会的日子，姑娘们就会身着新衣来到花前月下，抬头仰望星空，寻找银河两边的牛郎星和织女星，希望能看到他们一年一度的相会，祈求上天能让自己像织女那样心灵手巧，能有如意称心的美满婚姻。这就是七夕乞巧节的来历。 乞巧节在民间是一个很热闹的节日，年轻女子们穿新衣，拜双星，并向织女”乞巧”。乞巧的活动种类很多，最常见的是穿针乞巧。年轻妇女们拿来彩线和七根针，如果能很顺利地穿过，就是巧手姑娘。 七夕被认为是中国古代的”情人节”，牛郎织女七夕鹊桥相会的传说赋予了这个节日几分浪漫的色彩。据说，人们当晚在葡萄架下还能听到牛郎织女的脉脉情话呢。
