Located in the northeast section of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, Xining enjoys a clear sky with white clouds and bright sunshine, and the special melody of “Huar.”
“Huar” is the unique folk-song of northwestern china, expressing subtle aspects of love and marriage. However, this doesn’t mean that you can only hear these songs from young lovers. On any street or in any shop, you can find the familiar melodies.
Everyone in Xining sings “Huar,” from children to the elders. But to hear the most original songs, you need to visit Xining during the fifth or sixth month of the lunar calendar, when the city holds the “Huar Song Competition.” In the most beautiful season of the plateau, people of all ages and both sexes are dressed in their best folk-costumes, gathering at the competition.
