        Chongqing has a long history of over 3,000 years. It is located in the southeast of Sichuan Basin, just at the (confluence)joint of two rivers, the Yangtze and the Jialing River. The city proper is bordered by water on three sides: something like a narrow peninsula or a land in water. Because of this Chongqing was called River State long ago.

        In 316 B.C, Qin Dynasty destroyed the State of Ba and set up the Ba County, still with the River State as its capital. And in this year, General Zhangyi built this State, which was the first time when Chongqing was constructed.

        In 226B.C, Liyan, the commander-in –chief of the River State built a big city based on the land of Chongqing at that time, which was about 7 kilometers in circumference. The Chongqing was constructed for the second time.

        And at the end of Southern Song Dynasty, the governor of Chongqing, Peng daya rebuilt Chongqing in order to resist the attack of Yuan Dynasty and protect Song Dynasty. It was the third time that Chongqing was consolidated.

        In the first several years of Ming Dynasty, the general of defender Daiding repaired and constructed the Chongqing city on a large scale. He charged the city wall into stones, which was ten Zhangs and eighteen Lis in circumference. There were 17 gates with nine opened and eight closed, which means the nine palaces and the eight diagrams. And this was the fourth time that Chongqing was constructed.

        After the Liberation of Chongqing on the December 30, 1949, one of the leaders of Deng Xiaoping, he made a solid foundation for the construction work of new Chongqing.

        And on the March 14, 1997, Chongqing was entered a totally new historical period. It became the fourth municipality directly under the central government succeeding Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin.

        The new Chongqing is composed of the old Chongqing city, Wanxian city, Fulin city and Qianjiang area, which includes 40 areas, counties and cities. The whole city is 470 kilometers long and 450 wide. Chongqing is adjacent to Hubei province, Hunan province, Guizhou province, Sichuan province and Shaanxi province, covering an area of over 82,400 square kilometers, and with a population of 30,920,000 people. Now Chongqing is the biggest and most populated metropolis of the four. As we know, Chongqing is the economic center in the upper reaches of Yangtzs River. And the transportation is developing. There are 21 bridges acrossing the Yangtz River and the Jialing River in Chongqing. So Chongqing is called “the city of Bridges”. Because of its special terrain, Chongqing is called hilly city. And the Hight scene is the most beautiful scenery attracting many tourists.

        The high and short hills and the surrounding land formation decides the characterize of Chongqing’s weather. Chongqing is very hot in summer, which is listed as one of “the three furnaces” along the Yangtze River.

        Chongqing people love delicious food, especial hot pot. Hot pot is so delicious that a lot of tourists praised it profusely. There are so many scenic spots in Chongqing. Chongqing is the beginning of the three gorges and has one World Cultural Heritage site named Dazu Stone Carvings. The night view of Chongqing is very beautiful because of the rising and falling topographic relief. So people can see all kinds of pretty lights from the sky to the water.

        Great changes have taken place in Chongqing since it became the coming’s fourth metropolis. The planning of Chongqing has become more perfect and the transportation more convenient. It is definite that Chongqing will have a bright future with its present advantages and the hard work of its people.
