上海世博会:Shanghai’s World expo a stunning achievement
This city is alive and well, and I mean really alive and well. Some 20 million people live here, and I think every one of them has a cell phone better than mine.
We’re here as part of a San Francisco sister city delegation visit to World Expo 2010, led by Mayor Gavin Newsom.
Former Mayor Frank Jordan is also here, as are Assessor Phil Ting, super lawyer Joe Cotchett, the Glide Memorial Choir and some of the most talented Irish dancers the local clubs have ever seen.
As for the expo itself? Magnificent. And talk about a statement of the new world economic order – there’s a nine-hour wait to get into the Saudi pavilion and a 4 1/2-hour line for the Chinese exhibit. The line for the U.S. pavilion: about 45 minutes.
The General Motors pavilion, however, is a real hit. A stunner of a building that rivals anything the other nations have put up. All I could think when I went in was, how much of our bailout money went for this?
The Chinese pavilion is just incredible. They have what looks like a river flowing in front of it, but when you get up close you realize that it’s all done with lights.
We should do the same outside the Asian Art Museum. It would be one hell of an attraction.
