Go up the left side and make sure you go to the left side until the end of the renovated part. We were all alone there. You should be physically fit, though. The steps are challenging. Once I climbed up a little ways, the crowd thinned out to almost nothing--it was quiet. But it was a difficult walk up. Badaling is easier to walk, but far too many people there make it impossible to move. Plus, there are fewer hawkers at Mutianyu. Mutianyu was much better than Badaling.
