Especially in the CN new year. The oranges become one of the best-seeling products in Guangdong Province. Of course it tastes good, but,the Cantonese like it more than its sweet taste.

Obviously, the orange tree in front of a shop is not for eat. “Orange” in Cantonese sounds like “propitious”(“桔”在广东话里谐音为“吉”), so, everyone decorates their homes or shops with orange tree during the CN new year festival, just like Christmas tree during Christmas in western countries.
It is different from the North of china, at least the people in Beijing will not buy the orange tree for decoration only(its taste not good, I tried.). but you know something, every family or shop in this small town(my wife’s hometown) will buy no less than one orange tree before the CN new year Eve. The rests will throw away to the sea finally(I heard they did it once, it was expensive to transform the trees back). Every family or shop will buy at least one tree, although it is a small town.
Doing a business in Guangdong, the most important thing is make a good excuse first. of course, you must know the local language well, the Cantonese. Gudong is an interesting place in China, it is difficult for North of China People buy something at the same time.
My wife’s hometown located south west to Guangzhou city. it is a small town, but warm in winter and lots of sea food, named Dianbai(电白), close to the sea.
