The teachers in the Kindergarten told me to bring a gift for the kids’ X’mas party. They will swap the gifts in the party. My wife criticized the school at once about this naive activity. This is china, she said, there are many excellent traditional Chinese festivals,  and even the New year is better than the X’mas. It is no good for the kids(3~6 years old kids) to celebrate the important-to-western X’mas.  and there is no western teachers and no western kids in the kindergarten, what are they going to cerebrate for? Obviously, she has been agary. You can see, my wife is more traditional than me. To be honest, me dont like the X’mas either.  too commercialization. In fact, most of Chinese dont like it, but we have to face it everyday and everywhere.

If we talk about the business model or e-commerce or a movie magic or Web 2.0, we must talk about the western.  I hope the China day will come earlier. then we will tell them what is Taiji quan, what is 书法, what is 三字经, and what is 春节.

Many people in the West do not like how Christmas, a religious holiday, has become so commercialized and its real meaning regulated to the background. But I agree that the traditional Chinese holidays should be celebrated and learned about in China, as there is a very deep history in these celebrations and they are very interesting to learn about. But learning about the holidays of other cultures maybe is a good thing as long as it is not commercialized too much?

It does make me sad to see how Christmas, an important religious holiday for Christians, has been turned into a Western, capitalist festival promoting consumption. In an ideal world, Christmas would be only celebrated by those who follow the Christian faith, both in China and in the West. But I suppose it is too late for that. I hope at least some people have some fun with it.

But I don’t see why it needs to threaten Chinese holidays and traditions…I do hope that people celebrate those traditions as well!

    Hi Nic and Elliott
in China, lots of Chinese don’d like the Christmas, much less people know the real meaning of Christmas. and they don’d care about it either. they believe it is a kind of culture invasion. Chinese don’t like any kind of invasion. they have a strong nationalism sometimes and without any reason. I am not going to criticize this behavior. but just wanna tell it is a truth. and at the meantime, they don’t know why they like the Chinese tradtional festivals. they just like it. another truth. no reason. it is interesting to some westerns i think.
