There is a Wen(Chinese 文,Pin Yin:Wen 2nd tone) in my Chinese name, means culture or literature, my parents hope I will be someone in the  literature field. but unfortunately, I am not. I am only an editor in a sciency periodical, maybe this is the only thing I can show off. and I have no plan of publishing a book someday in the future yet. so,I made them down. I am not suit for my name at least.

Then I made an English name for myself. Winser. no meaning. thats good, I like it. Nobody will ask me what does the name means any more.and I will tell them the story above if they wonder why did I have an English name. LOL. Actually, my English name is a part of my business. well,I have some foreign friends, it is easy for them if I have an English name.

But,I found, there is some meaning in the English name too. For example, there is a co-author in my blog, now her English name is Ash, but do you know her 1st English name? It was Satan. Yeah, I am serious. a lovely and beautiful girl made Satan as her English name! She told me,she knew the meaning of Satan, she just want people noticed her,and know she is not someone, so she choose the evil devil as her name. She just thought it was funny. but some western friends dont like it. and they said it is not good for my business. No, I must let her choose another English word. Then,Ash is her English name now.

Chinese know the Chinese name, and the English speakers know the English name. so if you are a Chinese, and you need an English name, ask for some English speakers for a help. vic verser.of course you can give you a name for joke.

I don’t know. Many of my friends I met with their English names, but as I got to know them better I called them by their Chinese names instead. Even my wife, I first knew by her English name, but quickly I started calling her by her Chinese name.

It is interesting that in Chinese culture that the meaning of a name is very important, while many Western parents will name their child but have no meaning what the name of their children really means. This is probably, in part, because the “English” name comes from another culture. My name means “Victory of the People” in Greek, where the full name, Nicholas, comes from.

You are not the only one western friend who remind me to use my Chinese name instead. English name maybe just easy to read, easy to remember, easy to shout, for western people, just the same as you said about your wife’s name, first you called her English name, then the Chinese name. actually, Chinese name is quite complicated.not only a symbol, but also have some meaning in it. the parents’ hope, and good luck, and beautiful words. I found you already call my Chinese name very soon after our met. It is good and kind of you. thanks.

Also, I would say your given name of WenGeng is fitting, as you are a writer of literature in your blog, and you share Chinese culture with your friends and clients. The service you provide is much more than travel, it is sharing of friendship and culture.

Years ago, I had a friend give me the name of HaoJie, saying it was fitting for my character, but most of my Chinese friends call me Nik, which is fine with me. Addressing someone by their given name in their language seems more intimate to me.
